Run in changeable conditions on August 6th 2006, the race was won by Jenson Button – the British driver's first win in F1. In a career-best second place was McLaren-Mercedes driver, Pedro de la Rosa, with Nick Heidfeld completing the podium for BMW Sauber. This is the only time that the Japanese national anthem was played on the podium after the race, driver or constructor. In the treacherous conditions, only 11 cars crossed the finish line. The final point for eighth place however, was awarded to Michael Schumacher as the he had begun his 68th lap before crashing out. 9th place Tiago Monteiro completed the race 3 laps down on the leader, having only completed 67 laps. Robert Kubica had finished the race in 7th, but was disqualified when his car was found to be underweight. The result left standings at the top of the Drivers' and Constructors' championships almost as they were before the race, with Fernando Alonso leading Michael Schumacher by 10 points, with Felipe Massa a further 38 points behind. Renault retained their lead over Ferrari by a slightly shortened lead of 7 points (previously 10). McLaren-Mercedes closed the gap behind Ferrari to 57 points.
