  • Deep Space 2 was a NASA probe part of the New Millennium Program. It included two highly advanced miniature space probes that were sent to Mars aboard the Mars Polar Lander in January 1999. The probes were named "Scott" and "Amundsen", in honor of Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen, the first explorers to reach the Earth's South Pole. Intended to be the first spacecraft to penetrate below the surface of another planet, after entering the Mars atmosphere DS2 was to detach from the Mars Polar Lander mother ship and plummet to the surface using only an aeroshell impactor, with no parachute. The mission was declared a failure on March 13, 2000, after all attempts to reestablish communications following the descent went unanswered.
  • Deep Space 2 was a possible new assignment offered Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge, should he have declined to undergo ocular implant surgery in 2372. (TNG eBook: The Insolence of Office) The use of the name "Deep Space 2" after 2330 may indicate that a newer facility was been given this designation following the renaming of Tormerac Station.
  • Deep Space 2 was a United Federation of Planets facility active during the 24th century. In 2316, it was constructed in a sector on the rim ward edge of the Federation. (Last Unicorn RPG) So'Dan Leva served on Deep Space 2 as security chief from 2367 to late 2369. Nora Laas also served on the station as a security officer during roughly the same period. (The Star Eagle Adventures) In May 2369 DS2 hosted a trade conference between the Klingon Empire, the Romulans and the Federation. The conference was disrupted by a violent murder case.
