  • Raccoons walk on four legs, but their forelimbs are similar to human arms. That lets them hold things, and they even have a habit of rinsing off their food.
  • "None of us had ever seen anything like these creatures. [...] They were black, white, and gray, with black around their eyes and white around their muzzles. They walk on four legs like we do, but they can stand on their hind paws like a Twoleg. And they can grip things like a Twoleg, with their front and back paws. Their ears are like ours, but they have short, pointed muzzles like a fox. They're very vicious."
  • At first, he thought the fighting bundles of fur and teeth were sharpclaws, but then he realized they were different-- very different. These animals were roud and bushy-tailed, and they didn't hiss. They weren't dogs, and they weren't huge rats. [...] 'Don't worry about them; they won't hurt us.'

  • Raccoon For the other species called raccoon of the genus Procyon, see Procyon (genus). For other uses, see Raccoon (disambiguation). Common Raccoon (or Racoon) Conservation status Least Concern Scientific classification Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Family: Procyonidae Genus: Procyon Species: P. lotor Binomial name Procyon lotor (Linnaeus, 1758) Common Raccoon native range in red, feral range in blue. Synonyms Ursus lotor Linnaeus, 1758 The Raccoon (Procyon lotor), also known as the Northern Raccoon, Common Raccoon, Washing Bear or informal Coon, is a widespread, medium-sized, omnivorous mammal native to North America. Since the mid-20th century they have also been widespread on the European mainland[1] and in the Caucasus region[2] after having escaped from fur farms or being deliberately released to the wild. Two of the most distinctive characteristics of the raccoon are his facial mask around the eyes and his sophisticated haptic perception[1]; they are also known for their good memory[1]. Often raccoons live together in small, loose groups[1]. Their original habitats are deciduous or mixed forests, but due to their adaptability, they are also found in urban areas where some house owners consider them to be pests.[3] Contents [hide] 1 Appearance 1.1 Morphology 1.2 Senses 2 Behavior 2.1 Social Behavior 2.2 Reproduction 2.3 Life expectancy 3 Range 3.1 Distribution in Europe 4 Disease 5 Raccoons as food 6 Raccoons as pets 7 Raccoons in mythology and culture 8 References 9 Literature 10 External links [edit] Appearance [edit] Morphology Close-up of a raccoon's face. Track of a raccoonAlong the body raccoons measure between 41 and 71 cm[2] (16.1–28.0 in), not including their tail which can measure between 19.2 and 40.5 cm[4] (7.6–15.9 in), but is usually not much longer than 25 cm[1] (9.8 in). The shoulder height is between 22.8 and 30.4 cm (9.0–12.0 in).[2] The body weight of an adult raccoon varies strongly with habitat and can range from 1.8 to 13.6 kg (4.0–30.0 lb), but is usually between 3.9 and 9.0 kg (8.6–19.8 lb).[4] The smallest species are found in Southern Florida, while those near the Northern limits of the raccoon's range tend to be the largest.[4] Male specimen are usually 15 to 20% heavier than females.[2] Due to their fat storage raccoons can weigh as much as 50% more at the beginning of winter than in spring. The largest recorded raccoon weighed over 28.4 kg (62.6 lb), by far the largest size recorded for a family member of the Procyonidae.[4] Raccoons have black coloring around the eyes, reminiscent of a "bandit's mask", which has enhanced its reputation for mischief. It also has a bushy tail with alternating light and dark rings. The coat is a mixture of gray, brown, and black, with the exception of the rare albino. Currently there is a search under way to validate sightings of half albino, possibly leucistic raccoons. These sightings have occurred in Indiana, specifically the West Lafayette region.[citation needed] Raccoons have 40 teeth, which are adapted to an omnivorous lifestyle. The chewing surface is not as wide as for herbivores, but the teeth are not as sharp and pointed as those of a carnivore. [edit] Senses The eyes of raccoons, which are color blind, work especially well for green light.[1] Although they are able to see well in the twilight thanks to their Tapetum lucidum behind the retina[1] and their accommodation of 11 Dioptre is comparable to that of humans[1], the visual perception is of subordinate importance to raccoons[1]. Apart from being useful for the orientation in the dark their olfaction is particularly important for communicating with other raccoons.[1] Urine, feces, and gland secretions, usually distributed with their anal glands, are used for marking.[1] With their audition they are able to perceive very low noices like those produced by earthworms underground.[1] Concerning high tones, their hearing limit is located at around 50–85 kHz.[1] [edit] Behavior Raccoon on the roof of a house in Albertshausen, HesseRaccoons are omnivorous, consuming a varied diet that includes berries, insects, fruit, chickens, and small mammals. Raccoons sometimes wash, or douse, their food in water before eating it. It is not definitely known why raccoons perform dousing, however it's not likely that cleaning food is the reason in most cases and the belief that raccoons do not have adequate salivary glands to moisten food, though widespread, is inaccurate.[1] Studies have found that raccoons engage in dousing motions when water is unavailable; researchers note that captive raccoons are more likely than wild raccoons to douse food. It has been suggested that captive raccoons are mimicking fishing and shellfish-foraging behaviors. It may also be that the raccoon is searching for unwanted material, as water is thought to heighten their sense of touch. Raccoons are often considered pests because they forage in trash receptacles or eat dog food left on back porches; they are able to open garbage cans with their hands. A skunk and raccoon share cat food morsels in a Hollywood, CA back yardIt has not been established that raccoons will prey on domestic cats or dogs, though occasional killings are reported.[5] Certainly, they will attack and fight if cornered. If a raccoon appears to be aggressive and showing abnormal behavior, such as appearing sick or disoriented,[6] then there is a good possibility that the raccoon is rabid.[7] In this case the proper authorities should be notified. [edit] Social Behavior Group of eating raccoonsStudies in the United States and Germany done in the 1990s have shown that raccoons are not typically loners, as previously thought.[8][1] In fact they show a gender-specific social behavior.[1] Related females often live in a so-called “fusion-fission-society”, that is, they share a common area, and occasionally meet at feeding grounds or main sleeping berths.[1] Unrelated male raccoons often live together in “male social groups” so that they can better sustain their position against invaders and in particular against foreign conspecifics during the mating season.[1] Such a group normally does not consist of more than four individuals. On the other hand, mothers will separate from other raccoons until their kits are big enough to be able to defend themselves.[1] This society system is called a “three class society” by the behavior scientist Ulf Hohmann.[1] If the food supply is sufficient the home ranges of raccoons can overlap drastically without conflict. However, some male raccoons may show aggressive behavior against unrelated kits.[1] For information exchange about rich feeding grounds or sheltered sleeping places raccoons meet with other conspecifics at gathering places or leave messages in the form of odor marks.[1] Raccoons also meet for collective eating, sleeping and playing. [edit] Reproduction Mating usually occurs in January or February, and a litter of two to six young (about 3.5 in average with large regional varieties[2]) are born in April or May (varies by climate). Raccoons usually live in hollow trees, ground burrows, or caves. They often travel along streams or rivers in search of food. However, there are raccoons that live in the forest not near any stream. Males have no part in raising the young. By late summer, the litter will be weaned and will begin to fend for themselves. Raccoons do not truly hibernate. They enter a torpid, inactive state, when temperatures fall below about 15 degrees Fahrenheit. [edit] Life expectancy While raccoons held in captivity can live up to 20 years, they seldom live longer than 12 years in the wild, with most only living a few years. The species' life expectancy in the wild is only about 1.3 to 3.1 years, and only about half of all males survive their first year. Illnesses, accidents, and the death of the mother are the most common causes of death for young raccoons. For adult raccoons, road kill and hunting account for more than 75% of deaths. [edit] Range Raccoons are common throughout North America from southern Canada to Panama. Raccoons are one of the largest animals to have adapted well to human development. Suburban areas, and many large cities, have significant raccoon populations. Raccoons are skilled foragers who can thrive on garbage and pet food. They have been known to take up residence in attics and garages, and even to enter houses through "pet doors" in search of food. When confronted by humans or household animals, raccoons may be aggressive; urban raccoons tend to lose their fear of humans over time. [edit] Distribution in Europe Distribution of the raccoon in Germany: Raccoons killed or found dead by hunters in the hunting years 2000/01, 01/02 and 02/03 in the administrative districts of GermanyAll raccoons native to Europe are the offspring of animals which escaped from fur farms or were deliberately released to the wild. Today, stable populations exist in most parts of Germany as well as areas of the bordering countries. Other populations are located in the South of Belarus, the Caucasus region and in the North of France where several speciemen were released from American soldiers near Laon in 1966. In April 1934 two raccoon pairs, which were being commercially farmed in Germany for their fur, were released into the German wilderness by poultry grower Rolf Haag at the Edersee in the Kellerwald range in the North of Hesse. He released them some days before finally getting the permission of the Reich Forestry Office to "enrich the fauna" in doing so.[1] Although there were several attempts of settling before, none of them was successful.[2] The humid and oak rich environment of the Edersee served as a nearly perfect habitat for the raccoons so that the further distribution could be carried out fast and steady. Since then the raccoons have been very successful in the similar habitat of Central Europe in comparision to those of North America. In 1956 the estimated amount was 285 animals, in 1970 it was 20,000 animals and in the year 2005 it was several hundred thousand animals. A second population center came into existence in East Germany in 1945 when about two dozen raccoons escaped from a fur farm at Wolfshagen near Strausberg to the east of Berlin after an air strike. This population is still parasitological distinguishable from that in the Western parts of Germany since 70 % of the Hessian population carry the parasite Baylisascaris procyonis which is nonexistent in the population originating in Brandenburg. Although a population bottleneck has been the result of this founder effect, there are no signs of a negative effect to the general health of the European population. Because they appeared to have little impact on forest ecology, raccoons were initially a protected species. This status has changed in recent years, though, and in certain areas hunters have been offered rewards to kill the animals.[9] The city of Kassel hosts Europe's first (ca. 1960) and densest population of raccoons in a large urban area with about 100 individuals per square kilometre (around 260 per square mile)[10], a figure comparable to statistics from urban habitats in North America. [edit] Disease Baylisascaris procyonis larvaeRaccoons can carry Baylisascaris roundworm, canine distemper, parvovirus and rabies.[11] Of the 6,844 documented rabies cases reported in the United States in 2004, 37.5% were in raccoons (Krebs et al. 2005, pp. 1912-1925). Seeing a raccoon during the day is an indicator, though not absolute, that the animal may be ill. However, healthy animals, especially nursing mothers, may also forage for food in the daytime. Rabies may be entirely without visible symptoms in the raccoon. Raccoon rabies is as dangerous to humans as any other strain, even though there is only one documented case in which it has led to a fatal case of human rabies.[12] Any animal with suspected rabies should not be approached. If it requires euthanasia, the local health department should be notified to obtain instructions on means of disposal. Saliva and other bodily fluids may carry the rabies virus. Many communities have animal control officers who can deal with rabid animals. Rabies is so prevalent in some populations of wild raccoons that several states and the U.S. federal government, as well as authorities in Canada, have developed programs of oral vaccination to try to reduce the spread of this lethal disease.[13][14][15] In Europe, raccoons have not yet been found to play a notable role in the spread of rabies or canine distemper; however, the Baylisascaris roundworm is widely present in the population originating in Hesse, Germany.[16] [edit] Raccoons as food Raccoons were a source of food for many indigenous peoples, as well as for early American pioneers. Today, raccoon is seldom eaten, but some hunters consider it desirable and it is still consumed in certain regions of the American South. An older edition of The Joy of Cooking had a recipe for preparing raccoon, along with other game animals. It is suggested that removing the musk glands and the fat before roasting will help tone down the strong game flavor. The limited interest in raccoon consumption in today's society is likely attributed to the emotive association people have with the animal being intelligent and adaptable. Its reputation as a scavenger is also a common factor with people (see Taboo food and drink). Other likely causes of uninterest are revulsion towards the raccoon's disposition to eating garbage, or its notoriety for incubating diseases such as rabies. [edit] Raccoons as pets Two raccoons in captivity congregate at a water source.Raccoons are sometimes kept as pets, though this is discouraged by many experts because the raccoon is not a domesticated species and may act wild and aggressive in certain situations.[3][17] However, a tamed raccoon acquired from a reputable breeder may make a suitable pet, depending on how responsible and knowledgeable the owner is of the raccoon as a species. In many states of the United States it is illegal to keep raccoons as pets, in states where it is allowed an exotic pet permit is often required[18]. The later also applies to Germany.[19] During mating season, many raccoons which have reached their sexual maturity will show destructive and/or aggressive natural behaviors, such as constant biting. To decrease the chance of this happening, every captive raccoon should be spayed and neutered at around five or six months of age.[1] Captive raccoons shouldn't be kept alone if possible, since they may grow lonely without contact to conspecifics.[20] They can also develop obesity and other disorders due to unnatural diet and lack of exercise. If no appropriate countermeasures have been made, a raccoon will most likely wreak havoc in the household because of his inborn curiosity. It is therefore to the best advantage to keep them in an enclosure if this is not already required by law. Training raccoons is an intensive process and most often not successful.[21] Although nocturnal, captive raccoons can be trained to sleep at night and to be active during the day. Young orphan raccoons born in the wild are usually not kept as pets, but cared for and released back into the wild through professional wildlife rehabilitation. However, raccoons raised in captivity and released do not typically adapt well to life in the wild. It is essential that raccoon kits which are still in the need for a liquid food source are not fed with cow milk but with Kitten Milk Replacer or similar products.[1] [edit] Raccoons in mythology and culture Raccoon depicted on a shell drawing from the pre-Columbian civilization at Spiro Mounds, Oklahoma. The raccoon plays an important role in the mythology of the Native Americans[22], especially his exceptional skills when catching crayfish were mentioned in various folk tales.[22] The word raccoon is derived from the word aroughcun or ahrah-koon-em[22] which was given to him by the Algonquin people meaning as much as they rub, scrub, scratch[22]. In Western culture the raccoon plays a minor role in Children's literature. For instance, Sterling North describes in his autobiographical novel Rascal how he raised a raccoon kit during the time of the First World War. In recent times, various anthropomorphic raccoons played a main role in the animated television series The Raccoons, the computer-animated film Over the Hedge and the video game series Sly Cooper.
