Feminists claim the movie is a feminist’s worst nightmare. The film tells the sexist idea that good women are those who are slender, silent and lovesick rather then those who are voluptuous, outspoken and sexual. It also contains the song "Kiss the Girl" which gives the idea for men that the “one way to ask” if a woman wants you to kiss her, is to just kiss her. It’s not a good movie for girls or anyone is general.

Now desperate to become a human, she agrees to barter her voice to the sea witch Ursula to become a human for three days; if she can receive True Love's Kiss from him within that time, she'll be permanently human. Otherwise, she will be Ursula's slave. Indeed, Ursula is actually manipulating her to turn her into ransom for Triton's crown, and she knows that the only thing Eric remembers about Ariel is her beautiful, beautiful voice... The surprise hit of the 1989 holiday season, it won Best Song and Score Oscars, and placed Disney securely back on top of the animated film business. It spawned a CBS Saturday morning prequel series in 1992, a Direct to Video Sequel in 2000 (Return to the Sea), and a DTV Prequel in 2008 (Ariel's Beginning). The characters also figure in the Kingdom Hearts video game series, and other tie-in merchandise and media appearances are going strong with Ariel as an official Disney Princess. A stage musical adaptation was launched in 2007, and a dark ride debuted at Disney California Adventure in 2011. A Disney Digital 3-D re-release will come in 2013.

  • With her fiery, aquatic teen spirit, Ariel and her underwater friends almost single-handedly revived the modern-day animated feature in 1989's The Little Mermaid, putting Disney back on top of the the cartoon heap for years to come. The Saturday morning series Disney's The Little Mermaid cashed in on the phenomenal success of the feature animated musical, which was based on Hans Christian Anderson's 19th century fairy tale. Although the TV series came three years after the movie's premiere, it served as a prequel to the film, taking place two years before Ariel would meet landlubber Prince Eric. The series found a 14-year-old Ariel exploring her undersea world, usually against the wishes of her stern father, King Triton. Like most teens, the rebellious Ariel got herself into a variety of predicaments, relying on her kindness and sea-smarts to work her way out of the mess. In the end, daughter and father were always reconciled, and one or both would learn a valuable lesson. Many other characters from the film returned for the Saturday morning series, including Ariel's best friends-the calypso-singing crab Sebastian, the vigilant Flounder, and the loony albatross Scuttle. There were also new characters along for the ride, including a young mer-tyke named Urchin, fellow mer-teens Shelly, Coral, Gabriella, and Pearl, handsome mer-boy Gil, and a baby whale named Spot. Similar to the theatrical version, the series included its fair share of no-holds-barred musical numbers, with many of the film's original talent back on board to lend their voices. One notable difference was the exclusion of the wicked sea queen, Ursula. Instead, the sea dwellers were harassed by other baddies, including the Lobster Mobster & Da' Shrimp, Evil Manta, and Crab Louie. Disney's The Little Mermaid was the first Saturday morning series adapted from a Disney animated feature, and its success prompted a flood of successors-Disney's Aladdin, The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa, and several more. Young mer-fans made the show a hit in its three-season run, and Seabstian the Crab proved so popular he was given his own series of short segments on Disney's Marsupilami. As for the little mermaid herself, she became the most recognizable Disney heroine since Tinkerbell.

Not only were they gonna turn on better products, but they were gonna turn them out fast. The films went from coming out every five to seven to even 10 years to suddenly every year. Doug (vo): And the film that sparked the Disney Golden Era, the revolutionary film that started hit after hit after hit again: The Little Mermaid. Yeah, you all know it, you’ve all seen it, and now we’re gonna talk about it. Is there any point in comparing it to the Hans Christian Andersen story? I mean, we all know she doesn’t die in the end. Disney wouldn’t do that. In fact, hell, I think they couldn’t do that. So, much like Oliver and Company, let’s just keep it to the content as it is. This is the first film in a long time where the animation was actually looking like Disney animation again. This was the return to the fairy tale, the smooth lines, the nice songs, the beautiful backgrounds, all the stuff that started with Snow White and most people think of when they hear the word Disney.
