Kyle went downstairs, and told his mother, Susanne Diamond, that he is leaving. Susanne said "Here Kyle, take this Bag. It will help you on your journey." Kyle replied, "Okay." Kyle rushed out the door, ready to get to Sandgem Town and see Professor Rowan. However, his rival, Drew Platinum, said "Kyle, did you hear about the Red Gyarados in Lake Verity? Let's go see it!" Kyle said "Drew, don't you think we should get our Pokémon before going there? You know wild Pokémon could attack us." Drew replied, "I think I can find a way to fend off the Pokémon." Kyle said, "Okay, fine, I'll go." Kyle and Drew headed off to the lake. While they were looking for the Gyarados, a group of Starly popped out of the tall grass and attacked Kyle and Drew. Drew threw rocks at the Starly but they all dodged them. Drew managed to escape in time, but Kyle wasn't as lucky. The Starly attacked Kyle, knocked him unconscious. A few hours later, Kyle was found at the lake by the Professor Rowan and his mom. Susanne took Kyle back home and put him in bed. Kyle eventually regained his consciousness and his mom told him, "Kyle, I suggest you go get a Pokémon at Sandgem Town. Kyle rushed off to Sandgem Town and made it to the Pokémon Lab. Professor Rowan said, "Kyle, choose one of these two Pokémon. They are Turtwig, the Tiny Leaf Pokémon, and Piplup, the Penguin Pokémon. Your rival took the other one. Kyle said, "I choose Turtwig." Professor Rowan gave Kyle the Poke Ball which contained his new Pokémon. Kyle went out of the lab, and found Drew. Drew said, "My Pokémon is far superior to yours. Let's have a Pokémon battle. I'm sure that I will win. Kyle exclaimed, "Go, Turtwig!" Drew said, "Go, Chimchar!" Drew said, "Chimchar, use your Scratch attack!" Kyle exclaimed, "Turtwig, use Withdraw! Turtwig hid inside its shell, and used Withdraw. The damage Scratch took lessened because of it. Kyle said, "Turtwig! Use Tackle!" Drew exclaimed, "Chimchar, use Scratch again!" Kyle exclaimed, "Turtwig, use Tackle!" The Tackle attack defeated Drew's Chimchar. Kyle's Turtwig had won the battle. Drew exclaimed, "I will win next time!" and ran off onto the next route. Professor Rowan came up to Kyle and asked, "By any chance, can you meet my granddaughter, Dawn Rowan? She is an experienced Pokémon Trainer and she might be able to give you advice about Pokémon Training. She also has a couple of spare Pokedexes, which will help you a lot on your journey." Kyle headed off to the next route and found Dawn. Kyle said, "By any chance, are you Dawn? The Pokémon Professor told me to find you. Dawn replied, "What for?" Kyle said, "I am a new Pokémon Trainer, and he recommended that I get a Pokedex. Dawn said, "But first, you must beat me in a Pokémon battle! Kyle said, "Turtwig! I choose you! Dawn said, "Go, Piplup!" Kyle said, "Turtwig! Use Absorb!" Dawn said, "Piplup! Use Tackle!" Kyle said, "Turtwig, use Absorb again!" Absorb defeated Piplup, due to Piplup's weakness to Grass moves. Dawn said, "Okay, here is your Pokedex. Kyle grabbed the Pokedex and tried to get to Jubilife City as fast as possible. Along the way, he found a wild Starly, which he caught.
