| abstract | - Peel would have known of the Mangrove restaurant because it was located in Notting Hill, which was where his mother lived. The area was the centre of London's hippy life as well as being home to West Indian immigrant communities and the Notting Hill Carnival. In the late 1960s, police raids on the restaurant and harassment of its customers were reported in the underground press. Peel mentioned on his 01 April 1987 show seeing the Mangrove Steel Band on television about 18 months before and thinking it would be nice to have them do a session for the show. He then forgot about it until he saw a sticker on Marylebone Road, London saying 'Support The Mangrove Steel Band', when he decided that he must get them in to do a session. After the broadcast the band released their first material, A Feel For Steel in the summer of 1987.
