In a comic book story published in Schtroumpf magazine, the Smurfs were preparing to celebrate Papa Smurf's birthday with a special party, but they had to deal with Azrael making his way into the Smurf Village to attack the Smurfs. In The Smurfs 2, this becomes a plot point for the movie's story, as Smurfette seems to think that her fellow Smurfs have forgotten about her birthday, and Gargamel plays upon this by giving her a birthday cake and present (a miniature version of his dragon wand) so that she would reveal to him the formula that Papa Smurf used to make her into a real Smurf. By the end of the movie's story, it is revealed that the Smurfs haven't forgotten about her and were simply trying to make her birthday party a surprise.
