| abstract | - The Dai Li were the secret police of Ba Sing Se who worked to capture, interrogate and imprison political dissidents. They were created by Avatar Kyoshi hundreds of years ago with the aim of "protecting the cultural heritage of Ba Sing Se". Unfortunately, the Dai Li became known as an extraordinarily corrupt organization, and did not fulfil the purposes proposed by its founder. Long Feng was able to conspire with the Dai Li and effectively rule Ba Sing Se, reducing the positon of the Earth King to nothing but a mere figurehead. The Dai Li's corruption and decadence was so advanced that they then came under the command of Azula, relinquishing any loyalty to the Earth Kingdom, allowing the Fire Nation to capture Ba Sing Se. The status of the Dai Li is unknown after Azula banishes a small group of them from the Fire Nation. It is certain that their power has been significantly reduced. It is possible that they have been disbanded.
