| abstract | - The Atlantic Free States were a political entity consisting of seven states that seceded from the United States of America in the mid-21st century. (Star Trek: Shadowstar Station: "Heritage") This is probably one of many ways in which Star Trek: Shadowstar Station continuity differs from aired Trek, especially TNG: "The Royale", in which the United States is said to have 52 states between 2033 and 2079. For decades, while the United States as a whole fared well compared to many other Earth nations, there were many states who felt that the country was heading in the wrong direction, politically and socially. During the 2056 election year, two consortia of states voted to secede from the union regardless of which presidential candidate won. On 20 January 2057, the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi seceded from the United States to form the Atlantic Free States. Charleston, South Carolina, was declared the new capital. Another group of states seceded to form the Republic of New Texas. By 2100, all seven of the states had rejoined the United States.
