| abstract | - Vincent Hanlan was a former Medical Examiner in training who was responsible for the death of Navy Lieutenant, Sylvia Waksal, having done so after learning that he was impotent. Thanks to Donald Mallard testifying in his case against Hanlan, Vincent was found guilty of killing her and was sentenced to eight years in jail for his crimes. In that time, during Vincent's imprisonment, the funeral home his family owned and even worked went under presumably due to a lack of business with their own reputation as well as that of Vincent's being left forever disgraced as a result of the conviction. Upon being released, Vincent began drinking very heavily while one night, he and his brother, Jonathan were involved in a car crash with both barely escaping with their lives. This later gave Vincent and his mother who had always believed that Vincent was innocent despite overwhelming evidence suggesting otherwise the opportunity to fake Vincent's death by using a body from the funeral home. A few years or so later, the people connected to the case mysteriously vanished without trace, only to be up as part of a meat puzzle that was dumped behind Bethesda Naval Hospital was discovered by NCIS Special Agent Balboa and brought back to NCIS where Ducky, now a Medical Examiner with NCIS received it and as such, he and his assistant, James Palmer, began working on it. After several long months, both men were able to identify the first three victims through the use of dental records. Ducky later realized that the case had come back to haunt him and told Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his team of what had happened, resulting in Gibbs reopening the case while also putting Ducky and his mother, Victoria Mallard into protective custody with the team taking shifts to protect him. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as while Agent Caitlin Todd was on watch, Ducky was eventually kidnapped and held prisoner by Vincent and his mother who had been responsible for the deaths of the previous victims. They both intended to kill him by draining his blood which would cause his death almost immediately. Luckily, Gibbs and his team who had managed to get a location from Vincent's brother, Jonathan Hanlan stormed the funeral home in the nick of time and triggered a standoff with Mary and Vincent who were in the process of performing Ducky's execution. They were successful in rescuing Ducky although Vincent, unwilling to spend the rest of his life in jail killed himself by slashing his throat with a razor blade which left his mother, Mary distraught as she began blaming the NCIS agents, claiming that they had killed her son.
