He played a total of 50 games over two seasons, 1928–29 and 1929–30, scoring four goals and oce assist. He played for the junior North Bay Trappers in 1925-26 and then signed with the New York Rangers as a free agent. Vail spent two seasons with the Springfield Indians and then was called up to the Rangers in 1928-29. He managed to score 3 goals in 18 games.

In the next season he played in 32 Rangers' games, scoring a goal and an assist. The Rangers then sold him to he Providence Reds. Vail played in the minors until 1935-36. After taking two years off Vail played from 1938 to 1943 with the Toronto Red Indians, a team in the local Toronto league.
