Johnson debuted in 1989, running four events in his own #38 Redkote Ford for which he would become known. Despite a promising 11th place start in his debut at Sonoma, Johnson slipped to 32nd by day's end. The rest of the year wasn't much better, as Johnson finished 22nd at Pocono and 24th at Daytona before crashing to 32nd at Talladega. The 22nd at Pocono would end up being his best career effort.

After finishing 34th at Darlington and 39th at Pocono, Johnson ended his career with a year-end best finish of 27th at Watkins Glen.
