Six months after his encounter with the Talosians, Captain Pike is tormented by visions of an afterlife he does not even believe in, but whose grip on him seems unshakeable. Pike is a rational humanist firm in his point of view, but the hellish imagery he sees each night begins to gnaw at his sanity. But is the explanation for this truly some manner of spiritual conflict, a leftover fragment of the Talosians' mind-games, or something the Captain's own methods place just beyond his reach?
