  • Forulkan War
rdfs:comment
  • The Forulkan War was fought between the Tiste and the Forulkan. It began when the Forulkan invaded Kurald Galain's southern border. Their primary aims were to extend their power over the Tiste and seize the Hust Mines. The southern branch of the Borderswords were first to respond. The loosely organized, ill-equipped force staggered the invasion in its tracks, protecting the mines and giving time for the Tiste to react. The Kurald legions performed poorly in the first several months of the war as their high command was decimated by assassination. They lost battle after battle until Vatha Urusander, a noble of a Lesser House, rose through the ranks to take command and turn the tide of war. His presence became so tied to the legion that it became known as Urusander's Legion.

In gratitude for their protection of the Hust mines, family patriarch Hust Henarald supplied the Borderswords with the first of his legendary Hust swords. The unnerving, haunted swords so defined the soldiers that they became the Hust Legion and were permanently tied to House Hust. Toras Redone, a former Bordersword, assumed command of the Legion. Anomander Rake so admired the Legion's stand at the mines that he personally visited Toras and clasped her forearm, astonishing witnesses. From that day, soldiers of the Legion considered themselves Andii, Sons and Daughters of Night. This caused a rift with rival Urusander's Legion which resisted all attempts to heal. The Borderswords' numbers dwindled by attrition until they were used mainly as a veteran auxiliary force. Urusander's Legion broke the Forulkan, sending them retreating in disarray. They followed the enemy turning half of their settlements into burn-out graveyards and driving the rest to the edge of their distant sea. Once the war was over and a punitive expedition against the Jheleck was completed, Urusander's Legion was largely disbanded and relegated to a reserve force. Meanwhile, the Hust Legion was kept in active duty, guarding the Hust mines and patrolling the realm's southern border against the Forulkan.
