During his time as her student, Hughes developed a romantic attraction for Beverly. Sometime during his service to Starfleet, Hughes was assigned as the USS Hood as a surgeon. The Hood suffered heavy and repeated losses during the Dominion War, including the death of Hughes's wife and young daughter during one battle. The loss pained Doctor Hughes enough that he decided to leave Starfleet in order to escape the violence. In 2379, Doctor Hughes arrived to Tezwa aboard the Syrinx to offer aid to the rebuilding planet. It was here that he was reunited with Beverly Crusher, revealing his feelings for her, and starting a relationship. (TNG - A Time to... novel: A Time to Heal)
