A handy place to send characters so that viewers don't expect to see them again, or to dredge up "long-lost" relatives without having to explain why they have not been mentioned before. New Zealand is nearly 14 months behind Britain with "Coro" episodes. (Canada is only 9 months behind.) Vernon Tomlin proposed to Liz McDonald on 3 June 2008, as far as New Zealanders are concerned, but it was really 13 April 2007. It were not only the programme to watch of a week, it were the only programme on. Folk in my street could only afford to watch one programme 'cos Our Dads couldn't afford to pay electric bills for watchin' "shite". The only thing Our Mam didn't like about t'programme were it's over-the-top northern language and dialect; characters on Corrie were using terms like "eh, chuck?", "nowt", and "by 'eck!" when no bugger in their right mind uses talk like Ecky-Thump in real life.

Since 1960 it has been produced by Granada Television and for most of that time it has been one of the UK's highest rated shows. Coronation Street is often noted for its mixture of drama and comedy, usually shying away from the sensationalist and far-fetched plots associated with the genre, and for its emphasis on character-driven storylines. In a 2005 poll marking ITV's 50th anniversary, Coronation Street was voted the greatest ITV show of all time [1].

It was first broadcast on 9 December 1960 and within six months had become the most-watched programme on British television. It has been one of the most financially lucrative programmes on British commercial television, underpinning the success of the Granada Television franchise and the broadcaster ITV. Coronation Street is made by Granada Television at Granada Studios in Manchester. It is shown in all ITV regions as well as internationally. On 17 September 2010, it became the world's longest-running TV soap opera in production. Coronation Street is noted for its depiction of a down-to-earth working class community combined with light-hearted humour and strong characters.

His role in the program was worked heavily into the script of the 2009 Red Dwarf special Back to Earth. During the events of the show the crew are hurled through a portal and become convinced that they are characters from a fictional television series called Red Dwarf. Seeking their creator in order to beg for more life, they track down Charles on the set of Coronation Street, while also encountering other Corrie regulars such as Simon Gregson and Michelle Keegan. It is actually the former that leads the Dwarfers to their intended destination; it is later revealed that this all took place in a Despair Squid induced hallucination, although the universe does still exist due to them having conceived it.
