  • The Federation News Service (FNS) is a media agency that publishes and broadcasts news throughout the United Federation of Planets and known space. (TOS novel: Corona; DS9: "Valiant") The UFP Infonet (FASA) may be the name for this agency in another continuity. Jordan Dennis became a reporter for the FNS at some point after 2374 (at least in the Pendragon timeline). He eventually hosted his own subspace broadcast, The Dennis Report. (Star Trek: Pendragon: "Wounded Soldiers", "Lighthouse In a Sea of Stars")
  • In the 2260s, noted journalist Tim Pennington served as an FNS correspondent in Paris, then later aboard Starbase 47. He was dismissed in 2265 by FNS executive editor Arlys Warfield, after reporting what was proven to be falsified information regarding the destruction of the USS Bombay. (VAN novel: Harbinger) During the Dominion War, the FNS was open about how badly the Federation Alliance was faring against the Dominion. Benjamin Sisko once told his father Joseph three months into war that the situation was actually much worse. (DS9 episode: "A Time to Stand")
  • Several reporters from different agencies, including the FNS, traveled aboard the USS Enterprise-B during her maiden voyage in 2293. Many of the reporters were utilized as "nurses" following the rescue of the El-Aurian passengers from the SS Lakul. (Star Trek Generations) While the Federation News Service was neither mentioned in the movie nor in the script, a tag worn by a journalist displays an affiliation with the FNS, while others read "Starfleet Broadcasting" and "GNN", possibly standing for Galactic News Network.

(Star Trek Generations) While the Federation News Service was neither mentioned in the movie nor in the script, a tag worn by a journalist displays an affiliation with the FNS, while others read "Starfleet Broadcasting" and "GNN", possibly standing for Galactic News Network. Several weeks before the beginning of the Dominion War, Jake Sisko became a reporter for the Federation News Service. He remained on Deep Space 9 when the Dominion forced the Federation to abandon it, to report on the impending Occupation. In early 2374, he attempted to obtain an interview with Weyoun, the Dominion's Alpha Quadrant administrator, for the FNS. Weyoun refused, claiming his reports were biased against the Dominion. Weyoun had also not transmitted Jake's earlier reports to the Federation News Service for the same reason. When asked about freedom of the press, Weyoun simply remarked that such beliefs were naive. (DS9: "Call to Arms", "A Time to Stand") FNS openly broadcast that the war was going badly in early 2374, although the situation was actually much worse. (DS9: "A Time to Stand") After the Federation retook DS9, the Federation News Service published Jake's accounts of life during the Dominion Occupation. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited") Later that year, Jake promised his editor at FNS an interview with the Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance, Zek. (DS9: "Valiant") In late 2374, Jake was aboard the USS Defiant during the First Battle of Chin'toka to report on the events of the battle for the News Service. (DS9: "Tears of the Prophets")

Benjamin Sisko once told his father Joseph three months into war that the situation was actually much worse. (DS9 episode: "A Time to Stand") Jake Sisko served as an FNS correspondent aboard Starbase Deep Space 9 immediately prior to and during the Dominion War. (DS9 episode: "Call to Arms") A week after Operation Return, Jake was told the News Service would publish his stories about the Dominion occupation (which had been censored by Weyoun) as a book. (DS9 episodes: "A Time to Stand", "You Are Cordially Invited") In late 2374, Jake told an FNS editor he would be able to get an interview with Grand Nagus Zek. (DS9 episode: "Valiant") Several months later, Jake was aboard the USS Defiant reporting on the First Battle of Chin'toka. (DS9 episode: "Tears of the Prophets") Belinda Gomez worked briefly as an onscreen anchor for FNS's North American regional feed in the late 2360s or early 2370s. She left this job, she claimed, due to office politics at FNS. (SCE eBook: Breakdowns) FNS produced a number of special reports in mid 2376 concerning the arrest and financial downfall of businessman Rod Portlyn. (CoE eBook: Troubleshooting) By 2379, Regia Maldonado was a reporter for the FNS and appeared at daily press briefings held by Kant Jorel. Prior to the election, she presented a special report on the presidential candidates featuring commentaries by former President Jaresh-Inyo, retired Starfleet Admiral Norah Satie, and author Jacqueline Sharp. (TNG novel: A Time for War, A Time for Peace) During the vote-counting process following the 2379 election, FNS accurately predicted Nanietta Bacco to be the winner, just as it had accurately predicted every Federation Presidential election since its inception. (TNG novel: A Time for War, A Time for Peace) It is unclear whether the Federation News Service is a government-sponsored news agency, akin to the United Kingdom's BBC, or a fully independent entity.
