  • The Messenger was a comet that was known to engage in a two thousand year cycle where it entered in the Bajor system and intersected with the Bajoran wormhole thus generating deadly radiation across hundreds of lightyears that wiped out entire civilizations. Scientific analysis of the comet revealed that it had a hydrogen core larger than a small sun with the interior possessing elements of a heavy hydrogen radioactive isotope that was known to exist only in a laboratory and resembled titrium. Thus, when the unstable elements interacted with a wormhole, it created an atomic fission reaction that created an apocalyptic event which destroyed everything in a star system.

  • According to Paarfi of Roundwood, The Messenger was an individual of extreme unimportance. His role was described in the history entitled "Special Tasks", which formed a portion of the novel Tiassa. We are led to understand that due to his extremely unimportant qualities, that the House, rank, and even name of this individual were not worthy of discussion, nor indeed, even worthy of recording for posterity in the history the author was laying out for his readers. It is, of course, the duty of the responsible historian not to waste any reader's time with any trivial or inconsequential information. Such information becomes a burden on the mind of the reader, needlessly distracting him from the fullest comprehension of the more important events being described. This can lead to lack of clarity on the part of the narrative, and impede the reader in their appreciation for the events as they unfolded. At the same time, an individual, however unimportant, who touches on events key to the history being relayed must necessarily be mentioned at least in passing. Omitting the role of such a person completely would run the risk of allowing the reader to become confused as to exactly how certain events had taken place, and in what precise order. For example, in the case of The Messenger, had his role not been disclosed in the narrative of the history that the author had so ably provided, then it would remain unexplained to the reader just how exactly Khaavren, the Captain of the Phoenix Guard at the time of the history being told, became aware of the injuries suffered to a certain Easterner named Vlad Taltos that formed such an important and interesting turn of events within that narrative; indeed, one could well argue (and quite correctly) that these events were, in fact, the primary reason for the history even to be worthy of notice; thereby drawing the attention of the humble historian to record the events and relay them to his readers in a manner appropriate not only to their level of understanding, but also to incite in them a certain intrigue and interest which, while not strictly necessary to the role of the historian, is certainly a valuable and useful ability in relieving the ennui of the reader inasmuch as it is possible to do so without varying from the strict progression of events, one upon another, in the truest and most historically accurate manner achievable. It is therefore, of course, critical that the course of the narrative never strays too far from the important historical details being relayed with unimportant digression or tangential discussions of an unrelated nature. Such is the duty of the assiduous historian. We find it gratifying, therefore, that the author chose to spend so little time and energy in the discussion of such an insignificant personage as The Messenger, as this should illustrate just how fully mindful the author was to his solemn responsibilities as an author, and a Historian. The brevity and concise nature of the descriptions of this individual, in relation to his minor role in the history being relayed, is therefore a testament, not only to the author's ability, but also to his keen sense of duty.

This comet featured heavily in Bajoran mythology and legend stated that it was responsible for a purge of Bajor's surface around two thousand years ago thus wiping out the surface civilization. Archaeological evidence supported this suspected event as traces of such radiation was detected on Bajor's surface. Whilst it had wiped out the surface population of Bajor in the past, a hidden shadow society living underground known as the Council of Guardians continued their existence for a century whereupon they sent some of their number to rebuild the surface world. As a result of the comet's actions, a belief system was arranged around it and it was suspected as being the involvement of the Bajoran Gods with it arriving during the momentous Battle of the Gods which the believers felt was responsible for the cleansing of Bajor. The Council of Guardians, who were known to the rest of the Bajorans as a lost tribe called They Who Wait, believed themselves to be instruments of their gods actions and that the Messengers involvement was critical in their destiny in the cycle of death and rebirth. In the mid 24th century, the Messenger was once more on a path to the Bajoran wormhole and Council of Guardians awaited for its deadly purpose to be manifested. At this point, hundreds of Bajorans attempted to depart their home system as they believed in the oncoming destruction of their world. However, Commander Benjamin Sisko attempted to take action in stopping the comet which prompted the emergence of They Who Wait. Their leader along with his entourage arrived at the station where they caused a transport to collide with Deep Space 9 as well as engaged in a large boarding action in order to stop any attempt at circumventing the Messengers movements. Despite this being the case, the crew of the station were successful in using Runabouts to alter the trajectory of the comet based on calculations by Lieutenant Jadzia Dax. Thus, the crisis was averted and the Council of Guardian members were arrested for their actions. Whilst the disaster was prevented, Dax felt a personal guilt as she felt that the most minor of miscalculations might meant that the Messengers course was forever altered and it might be now responsible for the destruction of a number of civilizations on its new path. (DS9 comics: "Dax's Comet, Part 1", "Dax's Comet, Part II")

The Messenger was in Seacouver where he met Immortal, Richie Ryan. Richie drew his sword, but the Messenger did not, and told Richie that he wanted to talk about peace. When Richie asks him who he is, he says that his name is 'Methos'. "You can take my head, or you can think about what I said." Richie soon took the messenger’s words of peace to heart to the point that the next day he interrupted a fight between Duncan MacLeod and William Culbraith. Duncan was furious, then stunned when Richie told him about The Messenger who called himself 'Methos.' Coincidentally, the real Methos had recently returned from Nepal, and when told about the Messenger explained the man was known as 'the other Methos.' The real one was happy enough to let the imposter keep up the charade, if only to redirect hostiles; "Look, there are enough people out there who want my head for who I am. Now I say, if he wants to play Methos, let him." The Messenger met Culbraith and tried to convert him to the cause of peace, MacLeod arrived ready for a challenge, but the Messenger stopped him, telling Duncan that Culbraith acted "...out of pain, because of what others had done to him. But it can end here. You can end it." Duncan told him that it will end when he takes Culbraith's head. Then the messenger played head games with MacLeod, bringing up Darius and his philosophy of peace, challenging MacLeod to be the one who would not consider peace. MacLeod left in confusion. The real Methos became exasperated with the effect the fake is having, so, curious, he visited The Messenger, and discussed the man's philosophy in a typical Methos fashion, quietly baiting him and making it clear he thought him a fool:"Yes, I heard about your beliefs. Do you really think there's no such thing as evil?" Methos was marginally incensed by the imposter's pretensions after all, he told Joe and MacLeod that: "A little pep talk, a little pop psychology — the guy is either delusional, or he is a fraud." Pointing out his message is doing nothing but getting young immortals killed by the rest who are not buying in. Culbraith arrived at the Messenger’s place, telling him that he thought about what he said but he'd rather have the head of the oldest immortal. The Messenger offered up his head, telling him that he doesn’t believe that he was wrong in trying to reach out to him, thinking no doubt, his passivity would again save him. Culbraith told him "Believe” and beheaded the Messenger and received his Quickening. Richie arrived a short time later and was attacked by Culbraith, unarmed until MacLeod arrived with Richie's sword, Richie managed to behead Culbraith. The Messenger's final epitaph was supplied by Richie: "You know, I don't even know what his real name was. I mean, I know he wasn't the real Methos. Maybe he wasn't right either, but he was a good man."
