Her starter Pokémon is a Misdreavus who she met when she was young. At the age of 10, after working to raise money, she was able to gain her first Poké Ball, and asked Misdreavus if she wanted to be her first Pokémon, to which Misdreavus nodded happily. Shortly after catching Misdreavus, Professor Blossom approached her, seeing a wonderful and pure heart within Gem, and asked if she wanted to become her apprentice, to which Gem happily agreed. Gem worked with Professor Blossom over the years, researching Pokémon.

| desc | - Madame is Gem's first Pokémon. She met Madame at a very young age, who would occasionally prank her. After raising enough money from doing odd jobs so she could afford a Poké Ball, she captured Madame with Madame's acceptance. Later on in her travels, she found a Dusk Stone and evolved her Misdreavus to Mismagius.
Madame's known moves are Pain Split, Double Team, Shadow Ball, and Dazzling Gleam.

However, eventually, Gem and Professor Blossom found out about the criminal syndicate, Ekisu, an organization that wants to shut the hearts of Pokémon and turn them into weapons for their own purposes. Gem and Professor Blossom had to flee their laboratory due to it being ransacked by Ekisu members. They made an underground laboratory located in Aika Woods so they could carry out their research. An out-going person, she never hesitates to begin and adventure, despite the dangers. Working for Professor Blossom has made her gain a few talents, such as being able to spy within Ekisu without being noticed. However, her most notable ability is being able to see the shadowy aura that surrounds a Shadow Pokémon without the use of any technology. She wears Professor Blossom's first prototype of a Snag Machine, which were invented in the Orre Region, being able to function properly, but has a vast amount of bugs, under her left sleeve.
