Following his father's death, Baatin likewise became involved with the Qatala. He also became involved with the rival Orion Syndicate, in an apparent effort to profit off of both organizations. When this was discovered, he was killed by Qatala head Mahfouz Qadir. Before his death, however, Baatin was able to secure forged documents for Samir, which disassociated him from any criminal activity, and enabled him to enroll at Starfleet Academy. In 2336, Samir disavowed any of the debts Qatala leader Mahfouz Qadir had owed Baatin, and any right of revenge on his behalf. (ST - The Lost Era novel: Well of Souls)
