  • JUDGE JOE? Former Republican Pittsburgh mayoral candidate Joe Weinroth is running for office again, but this time he won't be a punching bag for the Democrat mayoral nominee. The Squirrel Hill attorney announced last week he is seeking a seat on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. Weinroth ran for mayor in 2005 and was trounced by Democrat Bob O'Connor, who died of cancer in September. Weinroth decided against another bid for the office in the special election to determine who fills the remainder of O'Connor's term, which runs through 2009.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, the City Council president who succeeded O'Connor, and city Councilman Bill Peduto are duking it out for the Democrat nomination. City Republicans have yet to find someone sufficiently interested in political self-immolation to make a run for mayor.
