The race was the 81st Australian Grand Prix, the 32nd time as a round of the Formula One World Championship, and the 21st F1 race to be held at the Albert Park Circuit. Lewis Hamilton entered the race as World Champion. Hamilton took pole position in qualifying over Nico Rosberg. The new qualifying system was criticized, with many thinking that it was a bad idea.
