- Gwaihir was descended from Thorondor, the greatest Eagle who ever lived. It was said that he and his brother Landroval aided Thorondor in rescuing Beren and Luthien from Angband. He can be summoned by Lothlorien, Imladris, Gondor, and Arnor using the Eagle spellbook power (he appears with two other eagles), making him the available in most factions. He is used mostly for slaying numerous units and dealing damage to fleeing heroes.

The Windlord subsequently led his Eagles to the Battle of the Five Armies. Finally, Gwaihir saved Frodo the Ringbearer and his companion Samwise from Orodruin (Mount Doom) after the destruction of the One Ring. Gwaihir's Eagles also served Gandalf and his fellow Istar Radagast as spies at their Lord's instructions.

Dann sprach ich mit ihm, und er trug mich davon, ehe Saruman es bemerkte." Dann trug er Gandalf nach dem Kampf mit dem Balrog vom Gipfel des Zirakzigil, am 17. Februar 3019 D.Z. und brachte ihn nach Lothlórien und schließlich rettete er, mit seinem Bruder Landroval und Meneldor, Sam und Frodo von den Hängen des Schicksalsberges, nachdem Der Eine Ring vernichtet war.
