The special was animated and produced by United Feature Syndicate with animation assistance from Gainax (the studio best known for working with Tatsunoko Productions on Neon Genesis Evangelion in 1995). The special was released to DVD and VHS on January 6, 2004. It was also the second television special to revolve around the Valentine's Day holiday, the first being 1975's Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown.
