According to prominent historian Ann Waswo, Nagatsuka Takashi was born into a landowning family. He was born in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. He is best known for his novel The Soil, published in serial form in the 1910 in the Tokyo Asahi Newspaper. It depicts life in rural Japan and it is based on Kossho, a town near where the author lived during his childhood. The characters are based on actual people although their names are altered.
