Makowsky announced his retirement from the CFL on February 17, 2012. After the Saskatchewan Roughriders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2007 Grey Cup Final, Gene Makowsky was presented the Grey Cup by Commissioner Mark Cohon. Makowsky, along with his then teammate Matt Dominguez, made a cameo appearance in the Corner Gas episode "Reader Pride".
