- An Alpha Splinter is the alpha male of a Splinter pack, essentially a larger Splinter than its fellows. It uses the simple jumping attack deployed by all Splinters. However, the jumping attack of the Alpha Splinter is harder to evade than the jumping attack of smaller Splinters, since it jumps ahead of the direction of its target. Ironically, after being possessed by the Ing, this jumping attack became just as easy to avoid as that of normal Splinters. Whether or not the Alpha Splinter and its smaller brethren were peacefully living with the resident Luminoth in the temple is unknown.

A group of Splinters and an Alpha Splinter resided in Aether's Great Temple inside Splinter Cocoons (the alpha had a far larger cocoon). As Samus Aran walked into the center of the Temple Sanctuary, the Splinters and the alpha exited their nests and attacked. Samus managed to destroy them all, but not before the Alpha Splinter was turned into a Dark Alpha Splinter by an Ing. It would seem that the Ing were going to use the Splinters and Alpha Splinter to steal the last amount of planetary energy from the Energy Controller located in the vicinity. Only one Alpha Splinter is encountered in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and it is possessed momentarily after the start of the battle, so it must be scanned quickly for a Logbook entry. Whether or not the Alpha Splinter and its smaller brethren were peacefully living with the resident Luminoth in the temple is unknown.
