  • South Carolina was an original state of the United States of America, being the eighth state to ratify the Constitution and thus become a state on May 23, 1788. It had been one of the thirteen colonies of Great Britain that had declared their independence on July 4, 1776. It would be the first state to secede from the United States in the months leading up to what is variously called the "American Civil War" and "The War between the States," the secession having been planned within its borders.

abstract
  • South Carolina was an original state of the United States of America, being the eighth state to ratify the Constitution and thus become a state on May 23, 1788. It had been one of the thirteen colonies of Great Britain that had declared their independence on July 4, 1776. It would be the first state to secede from the United States in the months leading up to what is variously called the "American Civil War" and "The War between the States," the secession having been planned within its borders. On December 20, 1860, the state of South Carolina dissolved its relationship with the USA, and from February 8, 1861, to May 5, 1865, was a state of the Confederate States of America. After the war, the state was re-admitted to the union on July 9, 1868. According to the United States Census Bureau, the state's population in 1980 was 3,121,820. South Carolina contained 46 counties and its capital was Columbia.
