Hinton played fourteen National Hockey League games with the Black Hawks in the 1976–77 season, scoring no points. He played junior hockey for the Kitchener Rangers and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from 1971 to 1973. Hinton turned pro with the Dallas Black Hawks in 1973-74 and played there for five years. In his rookie season he helped Dallas win the Central Hockey League title. In three of those seasons he scored 20 or more goals. He played one season for the New Brunswick Hawks in 1978-79, scoring 52 points, and then retired.
