abstract
  • The Conqueror II-class Star Destroyer was a classification of Star Destroyer. Developed and manufactured by the scientific minds at Umbriel Research and Development towards the middle of Thrawn's campaigns against the New Republic, the ship was at first only produced in limited numbers, as the war had expended such a considerable portion of the corporation's resources. Considered to be among the most powerful and sophisticated vessels manufactured by Umbriel Research and Development by the Galactic Empire, the Conqueror II-class was nevertheless drastically diminished in size and bulk, and this was done both as a way of saving on production costs, as opposed to the massively expensive Conqueror I-class, and as a way of increasing the design's sublight speed, acceleration, and maneuverability, by reducing the strain on the vessel's propulsion systems. Although the Conqueror II-class was lesser armed and equipped, field tests showed that the Star Destroyer could project approximately equal or even greater amounts of destruction onto a given target. This was made possible by its Singularity Core, which allowed it to generate what many people at the time considered truly staggering levels of power, which could then be externalized against an enemy vessel or planetary surface. As the class's capacity for troops and equipment was reduced considerably as well, at least when compared to its predecessor, its ability as a planetary subjugator was also abbreviated, but the design could still accommodate a sizable assault force. Altogether, the Conqueror II-class was considered less powerful than its precursor, which necessarily required that a vessel of the class had to concentrate more on surprise and tactically advantageous positioning than merely brute force, though a Conqueror II could hold its own against several enemy ships of similar ability if necessary, at least for several minutes. When combined with a considerable amount of modernization and dozens of small upgrades to the design's internal systems and weapon emplacements, the Conqueror II-class was actually more sophisticated and tactically redoubtable than its predecessor, while remaining less expensive and able to be produced in vast fleets.
