  • No hurricane has ever been officially classified as "Category 6" on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale by the National Hurricane Center. However, a proposed modification to the scale, which was suggested after 2005, would encompass hurricanes with wind speeds of over 175 or over 180 MPH. The hypothetical distinction could only be awarded to 17 hurricanes in the past century. However, a trend has been ongoing since Hurricane Katrina that all Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes have reached a windspeed of at least 175 MPH. The most recent such storm was Hurricane Felix in 2007. This list is a complete list covering all Atlantic hurricanes which could be considered "Category 6" based on the suggested criterion.
