abstract
  • Full name Class Nationality First appearanceOathbreakers (novel) Tindel was the Master of the King's Horse in Rethwellan. He served Kings Destillion, Raschar and Stefansen, and, as a friend of Idra, was part of the coup that put Stefansen on the throne. He was described as: "Medium height, dark eyes, dark hair, beard and mustache--his complexion would be very white if not for his suntan--muscles in his shoulders that made his tunic leather stretch when he moved. His sole vanity seemed to be a set of matching silver jewelry: fillet, torque, bracelets, all inset with a single moonstone." (Oathbreakers)Tarma had great respect for him, and his knowledge and care of horses, as did Warrl. Warrl described him as "lots of horse-scent, and not a trace of horse-fear." (Oathbreakers) Tindel had trained a young Idra, teaching her things that served her well in her mercenary career. He also helped warn then-Prince Stefansen that something was amiss, and helped him escape the palace on his brother's coronation day. Like Jadrek, he was a court functionary who was almost impossible to replace, and so remained after Raschar took the throne. He was also the only member of the court Jadrek trusted. Tindel eventually decided Tarma and Kethry were worth confiding in, and urged Jadrek to talk to them. When that conversation eventually took place, and was followed by an immediate assassination attempt, Tarma, Kethry and Jadrek fled Petras in search of Stefansen. Tindel remained behind. When the group returned to lay the groundwork for the coup, Tindel was one of their palace insiders, passing information and messages to and from people Tarma couldn't approach in her guise as Raschar's chief bully boy. The Horsemaster joined in the actual coup as well. He saddled the fastest of the Shin'a'in-bred horses Tarma had sold to the royal stables the previous year, and held them ready just outside the palace gates. If Raschar escaped the palace, the conspirators would able to pursue him without losing precious time. When Raschar fled, the Sunhawks mounted on the run and followed, along with Tindel. He lead the group along a shortcut to the Temple of Ursa, ensuring that they caught up to Raschar before he could get completely away. When Tarma and Kethry finished the Oathbreaker ritual, allowing dead Idra to return for justice, Tindel was one of the people who held the captive Raschar in place. He later helped Tarma drop the body at Stefansen's feet on the palace steps.
