Two years later, Ease returned to see Humfrey again. This time Humfrey answered his question, and then sent him on a mission to find the antidote for the antipun virus which as spreading across Xanth. Ease had stopped at a wishing well where he found a board lying on the ground. He picked it up and took it with him not knowing it was Kandy. She guided him on his quest without him being aware of it until near the very end. Ease and Kandy married and adopted Squid.
