She maintained a rocky relationship with former US Army cavalry officer Rance Auerbach. Summers first met Auerbach when the latter's unit attacked Lakin, Kansas in an attempt wrest the town away from the Lizards. When the cavalrymen asked for all loyal Americans to come with them, Penny and her father, Wendell, immediately joined. During the escape from the town, the Lizards strafed the group, killing Wendell gruesomely in front of her eyes. After that, she was never the same. When the cavalrymen took her to Lamar, Colorado, she spent her time in her crowded apartment building, alone with a Bible, despite efforts to coerce her out of her depression by her friend, Rachel Hines. Auerbach also made efforts to draw her out of her depression. In time, the two became lovers.
