  • Based on the real-life gang rape of Cheryl Araujo that occurred at Big Dan's Bar in New Bedford, Massachusetts on March 6, 1983, this film was one of the first Hollywood films to deal with rape in a direct manner. Katie McGillis stars in a college dating video in "Brian Goes Back to College", a nod to her being the victim of a rape in 1982, which inspired her to act the role of the prosecutor for a rape victim in The Accused.[1] Peter Griffin's fake pinball machine-related flashback in describing his prostate exam in "Stewie Loves Lois" parodies the film.

  • After a heated argument, her superior suggests she arrange a plea bargain with the rape defendants that requires some jail time. Sarah is hospitalized after she rammed a pickup truck, recognizing its driver as one of the witnesses from the bar and being outraged by his crude proposition of her. They make a plea bargain to charges of reckless endangerment and are sentenced to prison. Sarah is enraged by the deal as she did not get to testify in court against her attackers. Sarah is hospitalized after she rammed a pickup truck, recognizing its driver as one of the witnesses from the bar and being outraged by his crude proposition of her. After this, Kathryn decides to prosecute the men who cheered the rape for criminal solicitation. Sarah's friend Sally (Ann Hearn) (a waitress at the bar where the rape took place) picks three men out of a line-up as those who encouraged the attackers. They get three different defense attorneys for the ensuing trial. Sarah testifies that she was raped. College student Kenneth Joyce (Bernie Coulson), a friend of one of the rapists, testifies to watching the rape before he made a 9-1-1 call to notify police. After Kathryn's closing statement and a single summation from the three defense lawyers, the jury deliberates for a long time. They ask several times for Ken's testimony to be reread to them. In the end, the jury convicts the three defendants. As the trial provides testimony and evidence that the men raped Sarah, the three men already serving prison time for reckless endangerment are unlikely to be granted early parole and will likely have to register as sex offenders for many years afterwards.

Needs Wiki Magic Love. * Expository Hairstyle Change: Sarah cuts off her hair shortly after the rape. * Fan Disservice: Jodie Foster wears a low-cut top and does a sexy dance... then gets brutally gang-raped. * Flash Back: The rape scene is shown this way, visualizing what the college boy witness tells the court at the second trial. * Freak-Out: Sarah after running into one of the guys who cheered the rapists on and he verbally abuses her ("Wanna play some pinball?"). She reacts by driving her car into his truck several times. * Jerkass: Sarah's boyfriend could count as one, asking her when she'll "get over this" after she dismisses his advances. Also, the guy with the scorpion tattoo who cheered the rapists on, although he's not far from Complete Monster. * Mean Character, Nice Actor: The guys playing the rapists were disturbed during shooting the rape scene; Jodie Foster had to reassure them repeatedly that she's okay. * Rape as Drama * Ripped from the Headlines: the script was loosely based on the gang rape of Cheryl Ann Araujo, which occurred in 1983.
