Das Projekt wird vom Unternehmen Canonical Ltd. gesponsert, das vom südafrikanischen Unternehmer Mark Shuttleworth gegründet wurde. Ubuntu konnte seit dem Erscheinen der ersten Version im Oktober 2004 seine Bekanntheit stetig steigern und ist derzeit (Stand: Oktober 2010) die bekannteste und meistgenutzte Linux-Distribution. Die Nutzerzahl wird auf etwa 25 Millionen Nutzer geschätzt. Neben Ubuntu selbst, welches seit Version 11.04 standardmäßig die von der Ubuntu-Entwicklergemeinschaft selbst entwickelte Oberfläche Unity als Desktopumgebung einsetzt, existieren verschiedene Abwandlungen. Zu den offiziellen Unterprojekten gehören Kubuntu mit KDE, Xubuntu mit Xfce als Desktopumgebung sowie Ubuntu Studio, das speziell auf die Anforderungen von Audio-, Grafik- und Videobearbeitung ausgerichtet ist. Das Projekt Lubuntu mit LXDE als Desktopumgebung strebt den offiziellen Status an, konnte diesen in der aktuellen Version jedoch noch nicht erreichen. Seit dem 29. April 2010 ist Ubuntu in der Version 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) mit Langzeit-Unterstützung (LTS, also Long Term Support) verfügbar; seit dem 28.
