  • Every MU* has its own style and etiquette for roleplay. While we recognize that every player will have his own approach to roleplay, this wiki entry is intended to describe a number of things that will generally be considered rude, or otherwise frowned upon, as well as some things that are considered polite. Some of these "do's and don't's" contradict etiquette on other MU*es; when playing here, though, please try to respect our etiquette.

This is especially true on RP servers, where breaking etiquette is akin to hacking or griefing, and is punishable by a GM. In retrospect, some of the role-playing rules might be eased if proper etiquette is respected by the breaker.

  • The Victorian era was one of grace, elegance and vicious oppression of the working class. It was a time of fine social distinction, public prudery and private debauchery. Every woman was a lady at home (providing her family's annual income was above £50), and every man a gentleman except when fornicating with non-ladies forced into prostitution to feed the children of other gentlemen who had refused to marry beneath them. But how did the Victorians maintain their rigid social structure? How did they gauge the correct manner of behaviour for each encounter? The answer, of course, is etiquette. A Victorian dowager could spot the ill manners of a nouveau riche American from five hundred yards, and could wed her youngest daughter to him before he'd finished his third cucumber sandwich. But such social skills did not come easily. Young children were educated not only in the skills necessary to exploit the natives of darker skinned nations - Ancient Greek and Rhetoric - but also in the social rules and expectations that would allow them to recognise a well scrubbed pleb in a dinner jacket and send him back to the gutter before he contaminated the syllabub. From day one a Victorian child was groomed for a world of top hats and feathered fans, where a gentleman would always hold the door and a lady would never be seen picking up her own gloves even assuming the whale bones in her corset allowed her to bend. No matter how "out-dated" some of their rules may seem today, the laws of etiquette are there for the benefit of everyone. Would we not all be happier if the working class still worked and the Chinese knew their place - the laundry? For those of you that long for an era long gone by, here are some of the most useful tips for social etiquette that will allow you to stand apart from the common herd, to destroy that herd with a Maxim gun and have it made into a matching hat, coat and gloves.

Breaches of Etiquette can result in serious ramifications and can result in your Standing within the Invictus to be affected. In Invictus Courts all members of that Court, regardless of Clan or Covenant, are required to address the Invictus using the following etiquette. No superior should ever be made to wait for an inferior. Superior kindred should speak before inferiors in all matters. They should not be made to wait for them to finish. Breaking this rule implies a direct challenge of authority, and it is an acceptable lead-in to a duel of monomacy (even if it were unintentional - unless it were directly caused by the superior). It is not appropriate to physically fight in Court and unless permitted by the Constable, you may not carry arms in Court. The act of drawing a weapon or touching the hilt of a blade is indicative of a declaration of war against a member of court. You may approach a harpy at any appropriate time with business regardless of standing, terms of address still apply. Many Invictus Elders do not approve of modern technology and its methods and communication when not in Court is most frequently done by courier, letter or messenger.

This means the tendency is, the lower the server population, the better the overall etiquette as more people know each other.

In Britain, though, the word etiquette has its roots in the eighteenth century, becoming a universal force in the nineteenth century to the extent that it has been described as the one word that aptly describes life during the reign of Queen Victoria [1].
