  • A film directed by the Spielberg Brothers, Stephen and Steven, Raiders of the Lost Ark is the first in the Indiana Jones Trilogy. Set in World War II, it features exciting, edge-of-the-seat action as our hero Indiana Jones struggles to coach the "Lost Ark Raiders" from a no-hoper little league basketball team into a lean, mean, slam-dunkin' machine that can take on the rival German team, Hitler's "Shoe Stuffels". The team are helped by their lucky Ark of the Covenant, handed down to them by now retired basketball legend, Dr. Marcus Brody. But will the legendary good luck and fabled ability to melt mortal men like ice-cubes be enough to beat a team composed of pure evil?

  • Raiders of the Lost Ark, is a 1981 adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by George Lucas, and starring Harrison Ford. It is the first film in the Indiana Jones franchise, and pits Indiana Jones against the Nazis, who search for the Ark of the Covenant, to make their army become invincible. Indiana and the Nazis search for a medallion dubbed Headpeice to the Staff of Ra, owned by Indy's old flame Marion Ravenwood. In which the medallion will pinpoint The Well of the Souls outside Cairo, Egypt, the Ark's resting place. The film's origins came from Lucas' desire to create a modern version of the serials of the 1930s and 1940s. Spielberg originally suggested casting Ford as Jones, Lucas objected that he did not want the actor to be constantly associated with his films. Lucas persuaded Spielberg to look for someone else. Tom Selleck was cast in the role, but he was unavailable because of his commitment to the television series Magnum, P.I. Which left Harrison Ford to star as Indiana Jones. Production was set at Elstree Studios, and filming took place in La Rochelle, Tunisia, Hawaii and the other United States from June to September 1980. When released on June 12, 1981, the $20 million (USD) film was a huge success. Easily the highest grossing film of 1981, earning $384 million worldwide, and at the time, one of the highest-grossing movies ever made. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards including: Best Picture, in 1982 and won four more in Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration. The film was a hit with audiences and critics alike leading to two more films: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles television series. A fourth film in 2008 released: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Ghost kill Belloq, Toht and Colonel Dietrich.

To be consistent with later titles in the franchise, the film was retitled Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark for its video release packaging in 1999, though the original title is retained onscreen in the movie. Amongst fans it is usually referred to simply as Raiders. Lucas began production on the movie soon after the surprise success of his 1977 motion picture Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. While vacationing in Hawaii with friend and director Steven Spielberg, Spielberg mentioned how he'd always wanted to make a "James Bond-like film". Lucas countered that he had a story that was better, and proposed a concept he and writer/director Philip Kaufman had worked on in 1975 based around Lucas' desire to see a movie-style return of 1930s and '40s action serials. The story was set aside while Lucas finished his work on Star Wars. Spielberg's comment gave Raiders new momentum and together, with Spielberg directing, contacted Lawrence Kasdan to write the screenplay. Set in the early half of the 20th century, the film is the story of an archaeologist named Indiana Jones hired by the US government and pitted in a race against time to locate the mysterious and supernatural Ark of the Covenant before it falls into the hands of Adolf Hitler and his regime of Nazi supporters who seek to use the Biblical artifact's power as a means for world domination. Shot in just 73 days and with a budget of around $18,000,000 (US), the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark on June 12, 1981 saw the movie quickly become the highest grossing film of the year with $384,140,454 worldwide, and in 1982 was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture from which it won four: Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration. It was re-released on video in 1999, again in 2003 for the DVD release and once more in 2008. In 2012, the film received a restored, high-definition home video release as part of Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures.
  • Brian escapes from police officers by hiding in a giant wicker basket like Marion Ravenwood did in the film in "Brian: Portrait of a Dog". To find his little black book, Peter Griffin uses a device similar to the ark-finding amulet in the film in "Stuck Together, Torn Apart". In "Jungle Love", when the natives discover that Chris is a freshman, they chase the Griffin family in the same manner as the Hovitos chased Indiana Jones. Jones' pilot, Jacques is shown as he was depicted in the film and music from the soundtrack was played. They escaped, except for Meg, who died the same way that the guide did. In "Blind Ambition", Peter and Ernie the Giant Chicken reenact the fight between Indiana Jones and the giant Nazi and Ernie seemingly dies the same way as the Nazi with the airplane propeller. Jackie Gleason harasses Indiana Jones in "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", telling Jones to hurry up and take a golden idol. Chris Griffin has "HATE YOU" written on his eyelids in "Hannah Banana" just as a girl in Professor Jones's class has "LOVE YOU" written on her eyelids. At the end of "Peter's Got Woods" and "Back to the Woods", James Woods is studied by Top Men. In "Spies Reminiscent of Us", "Vladimir Putin" has Toht's deceptively menacing coat hanger. In "Partial Terms of Endearment", the artificial insemination is performed by Hovito, a fictional race from the film. Dr. Hartman says: "Well, perhaps you could tell them. If only you spoke Hovitos." just as Belloq did to Jones. According to the Fact Ups for Something, Something, Something, Dark Side, R2-D2, played by Cleveland Brown, was going to pass the time it takes to get to Dagobah by listening to a novelization-on-tape of the film. This was replaced by two travelers asking Luke Skywalker, played by Chris Griffin, for directions. Peter wants to finish the murder trial of Mayor Adam West in "12 and a Half Angry Men" so he can get back to the Director's cut of Raiders. A cutaway shows Marion revealing she is pregnant as the Holy spirits kill the Nazis for looking into the Ark and Indy suggests she take a quick peek. The DVD commentary for "Yug Ylimaf" indicates that the burst of light through the Griffin's roof is inspired by a combination of Ghostbusters and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The delivery driver collapsing after being shot in the back with several poison darts in "Mr. and Mrs. Stewie" is similar to the death of Barranca at the hands of the Hovitos in Raiders. Meg melts Michael Pulaski in "A Fistful of Meg" in the same manner as the climax of Riders of the Lost Ark.
