  • Oren M. Spiegler berates the Republican Party for nominating Lynn Swann for governor instead of William Scranton Jr. ("Rebutting Swann," Aug. 4 and PghTrib.com). I would like to know how active Spiegler was in the pre-primary process. Did he take an active part and campaign for Scranton? Or was he like me and most of the silent voting Republicans doing nothing to oppose the Republican leaders? If so, then Swann won by default, so why cry now? Jerry Platte, Penn Hills

Tell us, Mr. Spiegler, what should the voting Republicans do on Election Day? Stay home? Vote Republican and hold our noses as we pull the lever? Hoi polloi are the hoi polloi because they let others do the heavy lifting, then cry when they don't like the process. Jerry Platte, Penn Hills
