Upon being offered a scholarship he moved to NSW to play football with Newtown Jets upon which he was subsequently offered a contract with the Newcastle Knights. Boyd played for the Newcastle Knights and Cronulla Sharks in the National Rugby League and for St. Helens in the European Super League. Upon returning to Australia after a very successful career in England he played two seasons with Newtown Jets in the NSW State league coaching there reserves grade side to successive premierships.

Upon being offered a scholarship he moved to NSW to play football with Newtown Jets upon which he was subsequently offered a contract with the Newcastle Knights. Boyd played for the Newcastle Knights and Cronulla Sharks in the National Rugby League and for St. Helens in the European Super League. Upon returning to Australia after a very successful career in England he played two seasons with Newtown Jets in the NSW State league coaching there reserves grade side to successive premierships. Boyd was a centre for his entire career known for his exceptional ball skills, courage and commitment. Boyd was originally signed to the Newcastle Knights in 1991 making his first grade debut that season against the Cabterbury Bulldogs. He played there for with the likes of Andrew and Matt Johns, Darren Albert, Paul Harragan and Robbie O'davis. With Newcastle he played a total of 103 games From 1991 - 1995 and scored 87 tries. He moved to the Cronulla Sharks from 1996 - 1997 and played a total of 42 games scoring 32 tries and 11 goals . He suffered a knee injury two games from the end of season and subsequently missed the 1997 Super League Grand Final. From 1998 - 2003 Boyd moved to England and was part of a very successful St Helens Super League Team having won championships in 1999, 2000 and 2002 as well as a World Club Championship and Challenge Cup Final in 2001. He played 126 games for St Helens scoring 96 tries. Winning their best and fairest in 2000 and 2001. He was selected in the Super league Dream Team on three occasions. He then returned to Nsw to coach and play for Newtown Jets Upon completion of his playing career he moved to the United States for two years to work in sports management. Since his permanent retirement Boyd has been involved in Rugby League Junior Development and coaching.
