Starting 26th in the field of thirty-one, Tilley completed a little more than half the race before an engine issue sidelined him to 22nd. More mechanical issues also hampered a run later in the year at Hickory, but his 15th place finish would be a career best. Tilley again competed in a pair of events during the 1965 season, this time in the Speedweeks festivites at Daytona. Starting 14th in the Daytona 500 qualifier event, Tilley struggled to 18th in the race (of twenty-one), but still managed to gain a 33rd starting spot in the prestigious Daytona 500. There, he drove to a 22nd place showing. Tilley's final two races came in 1966, and he struggled mightily in both. He started the year with a 29th place start and finish in a thirty-car field at Augusta, lasting just fifteen laps before his engine broke. The results were even worse for him at Rockingham, starting last (44th) and finishing 42nd after an early issue with the steering.
