  • Despite its proximity to the three major galactic powers of the Alpha-Beta Quadrant, as well as the smaller Thallonian Empire, the Expanse remained largely unexplored at least into the 2370s. The planet Azandria is less than half a light-year from the Expanse proper, obscured from long-range sensors by its effects. (Leto Colony) In 2260s, the closest Starfleet outpost to the Typhon Expanse was Starbase 12 in the Fries-Posnikoff sector. By the late 24th century, the Federation facilities Deep Space 4, Deep Space 5 and Starbase 185 were located near the Expanse. (TNG novel: Ship of the Line; Typhon Station) The USS Bozeman entered the Expanse in 2278 and did not return. Starfleet had presumed the Bozeman lost, but, in 2368, the vessel emerged from a temporal rift and collided with the USS Enterprise-D, destroying both ships and creating a temporal causality loop. The loop repeated several times until Enterprise-D second officer Data sent a short message into the next loop, and, after several attempts, finally stopped the loop, saving both the Enterprise-D and Bozeman. (TNG: "Cause and Effect") Even though the region was still largely unexplored in 2368, the Ferengi Alliance had several trade routes running through the Expanse. (Star Trek: Typhon Pact novel: Plagues of Night) Later that same year, Helena Bourget undertook a medical mission for the Arkrand Society and did not contact any members of her family for over four months. As one of the Starfleet vessels assigned to explore the Expanse, the USS Huntly discovered her and her ship safe and sound, accompanying her to Starbase Expanse 3. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Breaking Benjamin") By 2372, Starfleet devoted more resources to exploring and colonising the Typhon Expanse and the area surrounding it. The USS Cantabrian was one of the starships assigned to the area around the Typhon Expanse, and Starfleet took over and built several starbases in the area, including Starbase Expanse 3, Starbase Expanse 4 and Starbase Expanse 12. The Devil's Cradle was also on the edge of the Typhon Expanse. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Catalyst, Part One", "Catalyst, Part Two", "An Innocent Time") In 2381, the Expanse was the location of clandestine meetings between the Breen Confederacy, Romulan Star Empire, Gorn Hegemony, Tzenkethi Coalition, Holy Order of the Kinshaya and the Tholian Assembly that led to the creation of the Typhon Pact alliance. The Expanse was then claimed for the Pact. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny, Star Trek: Typhon Pact novel: Plagues of Night)
  • In that year, the starship Enterprise embarked on an exploratory mission in this region, when it encountered a temporal distortion from which the USS Bozeman emerged, having been transported through time from the year 2278. Colliding with the Bozeman, the Enterprise was subsequently destroyed, and the resultant explosion, being in such close proximity to the distortion, ruptured the spacetime continuum. As a result, both ships became trapped in a temporal causality loop in which the Enterprise repeatedly encountered the Bozeman and was destroyed. Eventually, the Enterprise crew was able to determine the nature of the loop and avoid colliding with the Bozeman, thereby freeing both vessels from the loop. (TNG: "Cause and Effect" ) According to Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I") and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the Typhon Expanse was located in the Beta Quadrant.
  • In 2278, the Soyuz-class starship, USS Bozeman, was assigned to the Expanse on routine patrol. At the same time, several other starships were dispatched to the nearby Benecia sector to counter a fleet detected on the Klingon side of the border. That fleet proved to be a tactical feint, as the real attack force -- a single, over-built and over-armed cruiser, the Sosoy Tuj under Captain Kozara -- attempted to slip through the Expanse and attack nearby Starbase 12. The Bozeman managed to detect Kozara's ship and engaged it (even though overmatched). After dropping a warning buoy and leading the Sosoy Tuj out of jamming range, the Bozeman disappeared without a trace, entering a temporal causality loop. Its actions, however, allowed Starbase 12 to go on full alert and recall the fleet from Benecia Sector, effectively thwarting the Klingon attack plan. (TNG novel: Ship of the Line) Ninety years later, the USS Enterprise-D entered the region and experienced the same causality loop, leading to a collision with the Bozeman and destroying the Enterprise repeated times as the loop repeated. Thankfully, Lieutenant Commander Data managed to solve the situation and both starships were able to exit the loop. As a result, the Bozeman was over 90 years out of time, and the Enterprise was 17 days out of time. (TNG episode: "Cause and Effect") In 2381, the Typhon Expanse was the location where the Breen Confederacy, Gorn Hegemony, Holy Order of the Kinshaya, Romulan Star Empire, Tholian Assembly, and Tzenkethi Coalition negotiated a political, military and economic alliance, known as the Typhon Pact. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny)
