  • Lucille Frances Ryan "Lucy" Lawless, MNZM, was born on March 29th, 1968, in Auckland, New Zealand. She is best known for her portrayal of Xena in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess and Lucretia in the Spartacus television series. Originally, the part of Xena was meant to be a guest role, played by English actress Vanessa Angel, but due to illness, she could not make it to the set and the part went to Lucy, who had previously appeared on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys as Lyla and Lysia. When the character was proved popular, executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi created a spin-off: Xena: Warrior Princess, starring Lucy as Xena and Renée O'Connor as Gabrielle. Lawless has the distinction of being the only cast member to appear in Hercules and the Amazon Women and A_Friend_in_Need_Part_II, the first and last productions, respectively, of the so-called Xenaverse. After the success of Xena, Lucy appeared in Two and a Half Men, The L Word and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She also landed a recurring role on the newly revamped version of Battlestar Galactica as D'Anna Biers and was a runner-up on the American reality show Celebrity Duets. rRecently, Lucy appeared in Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi's Starz television series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, as Lucretia. She was recently cast as a recurring character in season two of the first Marvel Cinematic Universe's TV series, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a long time S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Isabelle Hartly, who like Xena is handy with a knife.

Her first major role was in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys pilot Hercules and the Amazon Women as Lysia the Amazon. She later played Lyla in the regular show, and then appeared in one episode, "The Warrior Princess," as... ...Xena. Xena proved so popular she got her own show, Xena: Warrior Princess, which made Lucy Lawless a star. Xena ran for six seasons, and Lucy Lawless continued to act in other roles. She appeared on the Broadway revival of Grease as Betty Rizzo. She made a cameo appearance on Spider-Man as a punk rock girl. But her next really big role would not be until the new Battlestar Galactica, where she played Intrepid Reporter D'Anna Biers, AKA Cylon Number Three. Her current big role is in Spartacus: Blood and Sand as Lucretia, and she is also playing Helen Burton on No Ordinary Family. She lives with her husband (Xena creator Rob Tapert) and their two children, and also has two children from her previous marriage. The dwarf planet Eris (discovered in 2005) was originally nicknamed Xena (after Lawless's iconic role), and its moon Gabrielle for Xena's closest companion, and best friend. Eris was named Eris, and the moon was named Dysnomia, which is Greek for "lawlessness." She was recently arrested with several other environmental activists after a 77-hour protest on an oil tower, to stop a drillship from departing its port.
