It is said that the two islands long ago made up one, greater island, but that it was ripped apart by an enormous volcanic eruption, accompanied by devastating earthquakes and tsunami's, which eventually separated the island into three parts, but the middle island was wrecked by the forces of nature and soon after sunk into the ocean. During the events of the Second Great Shinobi World War, the Second Mizukage and Third Raikage came to an agreement to split the island between the two nations. The upper half is referred to as Gunpō (群峰, Mountainous Range) and stands under the control of Land of Lightning, it's capital being Sanson (山村, Mountain Village). The lower half is known as Sōgen (草原, Grasslands) and stands under the control of the Land of Water, it's capital being Emura (江村, River Village). As the call for another Great Shinobi World War came, Kirigakure began to advance along the island attempting a siege of Gunpō. The famed Battle of Sendai Isle would take place as a result.
