Aside from a one-year term of service with Commander Buchwalter and four years with Commander Markova at the Academy, Commodore Masefield did not previously served with any of the Cooper's Crew. In 2284, Masefield held the rank of commodore and commanded the Baker-class USS Cooper. That year, the Cooper responded to a distress call from Rho Markessis VI with the landing party unexpectedly becoming involved in the planet's civil war. After the incident on Rho Markessis VI, the Cooper was ordered to Arcanis IV near the Klingon Neutral Zone. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update).
