Merkon was moderately successful at this, but he was unsure of what to do after hearing of the deaths of Vader and Palpatine at the Battle of Endor. A friend he made while in the Alliance, a Falleen female named Mazara Zudan, suspected that Merkon was an Imperial operative, and after the victory at Endor, confronted him aboard the vessel they were stationed on. After a conversation about the future of the galaxy, she convinced the Imperial spy that the Empire was going to collapse without the Emperor, and he agreed to defect to the Alliance. Following the formation of the New Republic, Merkon and Zudan both went on to work for New Republic Intelligence, and began a closer relationship. Over the next several years after his defection, Merkon carried out operations against minor Imperial warlords who bothered the fledging New Republic. He mostly did this by infiltrating their forces, causing internal confusion by sabotage and also by spreading misinformation, getting warlords angry at each other, and with other methods. This type of work he carried out until around 9 ABY.
