  • Malay ist ein Asiatisches Elefantenkuhkalb im belgischen Pairi Daiza in Brugelette (Belgien). Malay kam am 13.03.2013 gegen 18:39 Uhr im Elefantenhaus im Zoo Hannover zur Welt. Wie bei der Geburt ihrer am 24.12.2012 dort geborenen Halbschwester und Nichte Amithi fand auch Malays Geburt ohne Eingriffe des Zoopersonals statt. Malays Mutter Khaing Hnin Hnin hielt sich dabei mit ihren Töchtern Farina und Soraya sowie ihrer Enkelin Amithi zusammen im Stall auf. Malay war bei der Geburt 101 cm hoch und wog 128 kg. Khaing Hnin Hnin kümmerte sich gut um ihr Kalb. Sie befreite es aus den Resten der Eihülle und half ihrer Tochter mit dem Rüssel, sich auf den Beinen zu halten.

Ende 2010 gebar sie dann die jüngere Tochter Soraya. Die Abstände zwischen den Geburten waren - vor allem im Blick auf die langen Tragzeiten bei Elefanten - insgesamt sehr gering. Die beiden letzten Kälber Soraya und Malay sind Töchter des derzeitigen Zuchtbullen Nikolai. Über diesen hat Malay eine Reihe von Halbgeschwistern, die teilweise noch in Hannover leben. Am 22.04.2013 wurde - eine Woche nach jener von Amithi - eine Namensfeier im Zoo Hannover für Malay abgehalten, bei der nach längerer Auswahl ihr Name bekannt gegeben wurde. Nach Zooangaben handelt es sich dabei um den Namen für die Malaiische Sprache, die insbesondere in Malaysia und Indonesien verbreitet ist. Beteiligt an der Namenswahl war auch die internationale Patenfirma Johnson Controls, die auch in ihren Niederlassungen weltweit Vorschläge sammelte.
