He became an actor in the 1940s working principally on the stage but moved into films in the 1950s with his best known appearances being in the following decade in Ulysses, Barbarella and Romeo and Juliet. He was best known in the late 1960s in the UK for his starring role in the BBC sitcom Me Mammy with Yootha Joyce. He has been active in American film, television and Broadway stage productions and he and his actress wife Kitty Sullivan have adopted US citizenship. In 1966 he appeared in the Whose Been Sleeping in Our Beds? episode of the Coronation Street spin-off Pardon the Expression as the itinerant Uncle Mike.
