He first wrote for Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year and worked on My Friends Tigger & Pooh. His other film work includes the screenplays for the films Abdul Loves Cleopatra and He Said, She Said. He is native of St. Louis, but returned to Los Angeles to work on My Friends Tigger & Pooh. He has one daughter, Hunter, who he raises with his wife, Marisa Silver.

Additionally, his work on the series was nominated for a Daytime Emmy along with line producer Angi Dyste. For Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year, he was nominated for a DVD Premiere Award, along with Ted Henning and Karl Geurs. In May 2007, Hohlfeld granted an interview to St. Louis Magazine. In the interview, he stated that he had never heard of Winnie the Pooh until college. His wife was a major fan of the series and he became more interested in it following the birth of his daughter. His favorite character is Winnie the Pooh, with his second being Eeyore.
