When the Emperor and Darth Vader were killed at Endor in 4 ABY, Nistola declared the Thanium Worlds independent from the central government on Coruscant, dubbing it "his empire". The forces under his command became his army. Nistola, now self-proclaimed "Grand Lord", expanded his empire in the remote Borderlands Region, while at the same time, avoiding fighting the New Republic, due to the remoteness and isolation of his state. His empire expanded and he did manage to fight off an attempted attempted invasion by another warlord, Zsinj. However, unlike other Imperial despots, Nistola encouraged equality, trade and commerce, and increased development of infrastructure, and thus, many of the empire's subjects supported him. During the campaigns of Grand Admiral Thrawn, and later the reborn Emperor Palpatine, he pledged allegiance to both, but did not do anything to directly aid them, other than occasional raids on Republic territory. Finally, in 14 ABY, the New Republic realized he was one of the few remaining warlords, and turned their attention on him. In a campaign against his empire, the New Republic captured his territory, including the capital, on which he was killed during the battle.
